Week 2 Response

Why do you need to understand human cognition to understand design? Because humans are the users. Human brains and the way they work will become a primary consideration when designing a tool (or device... or whatever), therefore cognitive maps and models and soforth are a good way of assessing how a particular design will be received. Key point: don't make a design for yourself, make it for others. Knowledge of human cognition / memory acquisition and retention / learning is preemptive user testing. Let's all make some cool looking diagrams!


What is neuroplasticity? The idea that the brain is malleable. Once upon a time it was widely held that only young brains are able to form and adapt to new synaptic patterns, with the brain eventually 'hardening' and settling into established grooves. Recently studies have shown that brains of all ages are able to forge new synaptic links and reorganize access to information in a more efficient manner. Works well against Alzheimer's onset, I understand. Cognition is thus seen as a constantly evolving series of processes which can be actively molded and shaped, with beneficial effects on memory. Still, if you aren't forcing your brain to work, it probably won't do too much on its own as it gets older. Let's all play Brain Age!
